No matter what age you are filing taxes can be a stressful time of the year. To help you with the process here are a few tips to help you stay on top of your files this time of the year:
1. When are taxes due?
April 15th is Tax Day - this does not mean you should start to get your papers together on April 14th. Always be prepared ahead of time so that you have extra time in case more materials are needed or adjustments have to be made.
2. When will my refund come?
Refunds usually take between 6-8 weeks if you submit your tax return before April 15th.
3. File for your taxes even if you think you can't pay your tax bill.
There are penalties for failing to file your tax return. File your return even if you know you will have to owe money. The IRS has a number of options for payment plans.
4. Can I ask for an extension?
You can apply for an automatic extension using the Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Tax Return if you are not ready to file your return by April 15th. This is not an extension for your payment. If you expect to owe money you should send in a payment with your extension request to avoid interest or penalties.
